Panis Militaris: Die Ernährung des Römischen Soldaten oder der Grundstoff der Macht

Junkelmann, M.

Hardback, 254p, 92 b/w and colour illus (von Zabern 1997)

This interesting study looks at how the Roman army subsisted, both in peace and war-how enormous quantities of supplies were financed, transported and produced. The Romans were immensely successful at logistics-even in the furthest Roman outposts are remains of amphora containing wine from Italy, olive-oil and fishsauce from Spain.

With many colourful photographs of reconstructions Junkelmann examines transport, accommodation, cooking, whether more settled units became self-sufficient, rations, equipment, cooking ingredients and military technology.

The book ends with some recipes so everyone can get a flavour of Roman military life! German text.
